Reader Gayle M. commented on how different it is to be a “pack rat” versus a “hoarder.” I’ve been pondering this difference for years, and my thoughts have gradually changed the more I read about hoarding and people’s responses to it. Sometimes you hear about a person’s home and learn how much stuff they have indicating that they may be a hoarder, but they say, “I’m a collector, not a hoarder.” Then they proceed to give you reasons (or excuses?) for the difference.
My question for you all today is:
What is the difference between “collecting” and “hoarding”?
Where can the line be drawn? Or is there a difference at all?
Also, think about your own habits for consuming, collecting, and organizing. Where do you personally draw the line between the two? How do you know that you’re a collector and not a hoarder, or vice versa?
